Summer Research Internships
The Faculty of Mathematics recognises the important role played by opportunities for research in the training and development of our students
Thanks to the generous support of corporate and individual donors, the Faculty has developed a thriving programme of summer research projects and placements.
There are opportunities for projects both internally within the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) via the Summer Research in Maths (SRIM) programme, and outside the Faculty with other university departments and in industry via the Cambridge Mathematics Placements (CMP) programme.
These opportunities are extremely valuable, giving students their first taste of research mathematics, their first experience of working in collaboration, and their first experience of presenting a substantial piece of work to their peers. Having grown in popularity, they are a fundraising priority for the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and the Department of Pure Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DPMMS) so that as many students as possible can benefit.
The Faculty of Mathematics is committed to widening participation and increasing diversity in postgraduate studies in mathematics at Cambridge. To this end, opportunities are also available for students currently studying at universities other than Cambridge to apply for a summer research internship within the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. The Philippa Fawcett Internships are intended for women and non-binary students in mathematics, and the Cambridge Mathematics Open Internships are intended for students from groups currently underrepresented in the field (paying particular attention to ethnicity) and/or students who have experienced some form of educational disadvantage.
