  • The late Sir Elihu Lauterpacht, founding director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law
Sir Eli on the island of Sipadan during the proceedings of the Indonesia/Malaysia case relating to Sipadan and Ligitan, 1998

Through Sir Elihu Lauterpacht’s leadership and personal generosity, the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law transformed from its beginnings in his study on Herschel Road in Cambridge into one of the world’s principal centres for international scholarship.

Following the founding of the Centre in 1983 and Sir Eli’s subsequent retirement from teaching, he continued to be a familiar face around the Centre, as Emeritus Director, Honorary Fellow and member of the committee of management. He regularly attended lectures and events and spoke to fellows and visiting fellows about their research.  Sir Eli, who passed away in February 2017, will be missed deeply by everyone at the Centre, not only as a giant of international legal scholarship and practice but also as a friend and mentor.

This fund has been set up in memory of Sir Eli and will support the work of the Centre to which he gave so much. We hope you will join us in remembering this extraordinary international lawyer and friend.
