Athlete Performance Programme: supporting world-class athletes at Cambridge

  • decorative

To support the next generation of Cambridge students embarking upon a dual career, the University of Cambridge Athlete Performance Programme (UCAPP) is helping expand the roster of world-class athletes who developed their sporting career while studying at Cambridge.

The UCAPP programme supports individual students who are nationally ranked or who represent their country on the international stage in their chosen sport. It offers sessions in strength and conditioning (S&C), lifestyle support, physiotherapy, psychology, and nutrition: a comprehensive programme designed to look after students and ensure that they can give their best performance on the playing field, track, or other sporting areas.

The benefits that the programme provides have already proven popular and will undoubtedly contribute more athletes to an already impressive list and diversify and extend the range of sports for which Cambridge is known.

To be honest, UCAPP has been the reason why I’ve been able to keep going for the last year. With Covid, it was a bit of a disaster with gyms shut and I was really lucky to have gym access, to have track access, and keep things going when the world was falling apart.

Louise Shanahan (PhD in Physics, Trinity College)

Speaking about why he established the programme, alumnus Mark Hanson said:

"My motivation in establishing the UCAPP award was to encourage more scholar-athletes competing at a national or international level to consider applying to Cambridge. I know I was lucky to go to Cambridge and that it gave me a springboard. If you, like me, think that it gave you an opportunity to learn and achieve things that you might not have had otherwise, then consider giving and enabling others to have that same opportunity in the future."
