Rugby Union Football Club (CURUFC)
Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club will celebrate its 150th anniversary in the 2021-22 season. The Club aims to provide the best student rugby experience for both men and women, at all levels, across the University.
The Club runs a full series of fixtures in both the Michaelmas and Lent terms. Men’s fixtures include games against other universities, professional clubs and the prestigious confrontation with the Micky Steele-Bodger XV, which has run since 1948. Women’s rugby is one of the fastest-growing sports at the University, with the 1st and 2nd Teams playing in BUCS competitions. The Club also runs a full programme of College rugby, including league, Cuppers and Sevens competitions.
The ultimate aim of every rugby player at Cambridge is to play in one of the seven annual 'Varsity' matches, meaning that over 100 players gain the honour of playing against ‘the other place.' The Varsity series culminates at Twickenham in early December with one of the world’s biggest women's rugby matches, followed by the men’s Varsity Match which attracts a crowd of approximately 25,000 spectators and a worldwide television audience.
To mark the forthcoming anniversary, the Club has launched the Red Lion 150 Campaign, which aims to produce an annual income of £150,000 for the Club, through a combination of regular annual giving and the establishment of an investment fund from larger capital gifts. The Club has also established a legacy programme, the Cannon Gray Society, named for the CURUFC President (1895-1932), who secured the Grange Road site on a perpetual lease from Jesus College.
